ConvertKit vs ActiveCampaign: The Honest Take

Everyone tells you what to pick. Here's what actually happens when you use both.

I've used both. ConvertKit for 2 years, then switched to ActiveCampaign for 18 months, then went back to ConvertKit. So I've got some opinions.

Here's what nobody talks about.

The Real Difference Nobody Explains

ConvertKit feels like a bicycle. It's simple, it works, you don't need instructions. You just get on and ride.

ActiveCampaign feels like a car. More power, more features, but you actually have to learn how to drive it. And honestly? Most people don't need a car to get to the grocery store.

Where ConvertKit Wins

  • Actually simple: I can set up an automation in 2 minutes
  • No feature anxiety: It's not constantly trying to upsell me
  • The creator ecosystem: Everyone I admire uses it. That matters.
  • 30% recurring commission: Yeah I'm biased. But it's the best affiliate program in email marketing, period.

Where ActiveCampaign Wins

  • Automation depth: If you need complex branching, it's unmatched
  • CRM built-in: Actually useful for sales teams
  • Site tracking: See what people do on your website
  • Cheaper at scale: Once you hit 10k+ subscribers

The Unpopular Opinion

Most people choosing ActiveCampaign over ConvertKit are choosing features they won't use. They think they need automation complexity. They don't.

Your email marketing doesn't fail because of your tool. It fails because:

  • You're not sending often enough
  • Your content is boring
  • You're selling too much, giving too little

No tool fixes that.

What I'd Tell My Past Self

Start with ConvertKit. Get 1,000 subscribers. Actually send emails that matter. Then, if you outgrow it, switch.

The tool is not the differentiator. You are.

The Verdict

For most creators: ConvertKit. Start simple.

For agencies/bigger businesses: ActiveCampaign. You probably need the CRM.

For beginners: ConvertKit free plan. No brainer.

Stop overthinking it. The best email tool is the one you'll actually use.
